The 1st Cavalry Division, or 1st Air Cavalry Division, as it is more sometimes called, arrived in Vietnam in waves, mainly aboard military transport ships, between July and August of 1965. Upon their arrival, the advanced party of 1st Cav soldiers scratched out of the wilderness of the Central Highlands, a base camp near the city of An Khe. With over 400 aircraft, the division was pioneering an entirely new concept in warfare known as Airmobile. Airmobile infantry soldiers were known as skytroopers.
